Turning talk into action.
It’s good to talk about sustainability. But it’s usually even better to take action. That's exactly what we do at KAEFER by supporting and organising diverse initiatives in the economic, social, environmental and cultural fields.
KAEFER was founded more than 100 years ago with the aim to reduce the energy waste in ships leaving from the port of Bremen. This first guiding principle has influenced much of what we have accomplished in the century since, putting sustainability at the heart of everything we do.
Below, you will experience how we put this mindset into practice. Further information can also be found within KAEFER’s Sustainability Report as well as on the pages of the KAEFER FOUNDATION.
Projects & Initiatives
Successful Word Down's Syndrome Day
For World Down's Syndrome Day on 21st March, KAEFER colleagues all over the UK & Ireland initiated many great activities to raise awareness and support people living with Down’s Syndrome. Here are a few highlights: Our HR colleagues decided to walk 210,000 steps as a team on the 21st March all wearing their charity socks, KAEFER operatives from Shell, St. Fergus completed their 21in21 day challenge and the team at the Fife NGL Plant joined the 'Lots of socks' campaign.
Even though we cannot list all initiatives here, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed to this successful event.
KAEFER office in the UK runs with renewable energy
In September 2012, two wind-driven turbines were installed at the Jarrow office in the UK. The turbines are capable of producing 15 kilowatts each and stand out from other small-scale wind turbines due to their unique blade and hinge design, which allows them to regulate their rotational speed and therefore maximise their output.
They not only supply sufficient energy to power both the office block and the production workshop, but also enough so there is some left over. This excess electricity can be sold to the national power grid in the UK.
Running for the good cause
Every year, the KAEFER Running Team successfully participates in various fundraising runs in order to promote team spirit, solidarity and show their support for people in need. In 2019, money was raised for various charitable causes, from allowing people living with a mental disability to experience the joy of sport, a young Peruvian athlete to pursue her goals, to exercise and sports facilities, for people suffering from cancer and a wells project in Uganda. In 2020, the Venuslauf even became a successful global event, supported by the KAEFER FOUNDATION.
Our charities of the year
We wanted all of our charitable efforts to be focused this year, to be able to come together as a team and make a real difference. That’s why, as KAEFER in the UK & Ireland, we have chosen Down's Syndrome Association for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, Down's Syndrome Scotland and Down's Syndrome Ireland to be our charities of the year. World Environment Day
Since 1972 the World Environment Day has been held on 5 June. On this day, people of all origins, beliefs and ages on all continents set a common signal for a resource-saving approach to our planet. At KAEFER, we celebrate this day every year by initiating different activities such as seedling planting, awareness raising campaigns or environmental quizzes.
Tree Planting Initiative
Forests are so crucial to the future of our planet. Therefore, at KAEFER, we are delighted to support the tree planting initiative at Westlakes Science Park. The target is to plant two thousand and twenty one trees in 2021. Read more about it here: Link
World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day takes place on 10 October. In order to raise the awareness for this important topic, KAEFER entities worldwide participate with different initiatives, e.g. colleagues on different site organise sessions where they discuss mental health in the workplace.
