Behind the build: KAEFER’s role in delivering nuclear excellence at Hinkley Point C

Stretching across the Somerset coastline, Hinkley Point C is one of the most complex construction projects in Europe – and one of the most critical to the UK’s low-carbon energy future.

At the heart of this vast operation is the KAEFER UK & Ireland team, delivering a range of technical industrial services that keep the project moving safely, efficiently and to the highest standards of nuclear compliance.

Our latest short film, Behind the Build, offers an exclusive look at what it takes to deliver on this scale – from the people behind the tools to the innovation driving progress every day.

Supporting the UK’s nuclear future

Over 400 KAEFER personnel pass through the site gates each day, providing scaffolding, surface preparation, coatings, insulation and logistics support as part of the supply chain delivering EDF’s first new nuclear power station in a generation.

Our teams work across the full project lifecycle – from design and fabrication through to surface protection and access solutions – ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery in one of the most tightly controlled environments in the world.

This includes:

  • Surface protection and coatings: More than 30,000m² of liner steel and 89,000m² of concrete surfaces treated with specialist protective coatings to preserve long-term structural integrity.
  • Access and logistics: Safe scaffolding solutions and a 24/7 logistics hub scaled up by 50% to meet growing site demands.
  • Innovation and continuous improvement: Lean practices, digital scaffold design, and robotic blasting – all helping enhance safety and productivity.

Powered by people and performance

For Paul Ferrand, KAEFER’s Site Lead at Hinkley Point C, the film captures the teamwork and expertise that define the project:

“Every day, our teams demonstrate what collaboration, precision, and safety mean in practice. We’re proud to contribute to a project that will power millions of homes with reliable, low-carbon energy for generations to come.”

Behind the Build also shines a light on the people who make it possible – from those managing the site’s logistics and coatings programmes to those driving KAEFER’s Grow With Us people strategy, building a sustainable and skilled workforce for the UK’s nuclear sector.

A long-term commitment to UK nuclear

KAEFER’s work at Hinkley Point C is part of a wider, long-term commitment to supporting the UK’s nuclear new-build programme, with lessons learned and innovations ready to be applied to Sizewell C and future projects across the sector.

From advanced coatings to complex access design, KAEFER continues to set the benchmark for safety, technical excellence, and delivery performance – ensuring every project contributes to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
