Robotics in Action: Advancing Ship Maintenance at Devonport Dockyard
At KAEFER, innovation is embedded into the way we deliver projects for our clients. A recent deployment at Devonport Dockyard saw our teams apply robotic surface preparation and coating systems on a Type 23 Frigate, further advancing the use of automation in ship maintenance.
This integration brought together two complementary technologies: the VertiDrive V700, delivering precision blasting, and the QLAYERS 10Q, applying an automated, uniform coating directly to prepared areas. Supported by the Megablast system, the process demonstrated how robotics enhance quality and efficiency on complex defence assets.
Key benefits observed include:
- Improved safety – minimising exposure to hazardous environments and reducing scaffolding requirements by up to 80%.
- Increased efficiency – consistent blasting and coating outputs, controlled application thickness, and reduced material waste.
- Operational savings – optimised use of abrasives and coatings, with fewer PPE requirements and less time spent on access.
By embedding robotics into our delivery model, KAEFER is demonstrating a proven, scalable approach that strengthens safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness without compromising quality. This capability will continue to support the defence sector in maintaining critical assets and advancing shipbuilding programmes.
